AXIS International Academy (K-5) and Preschool will be located at 2130 W. Horsetooth Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526, beginning in mid-June 2019. To best meet the needs of a variety of families, AXIS offers full-time and part-time options across a full-week or a partial-week. Hours of available care are from 6:30am-6:00pm. AXIS has set rates comparable to the average cost per hour of local preschools, please see a list of program options and tuition below.
What sets AXIS Preschool apart? Unlike other programs, AXIS Preschool includes daily language immersion in Spanish, Mandarin, or French taught by a teacher who is a native or native-like speaker with teaching experience. The state requires and child-development research documents that preschools should be a healthy mix of teacher-led and child-led time. The language immersion time will be a teacher-led time to maximize partner language development through developmentally-appropriate experiential activities. For 3 and 4-year olds, partner language time will be at least 60 minutes or 36% of the teacher-led time in a full-day or 44% of the teacher-led time in a half-day.
In addition to language immersion, AXIS fosters growth in knowledge and skills through the content-rich Core Knowledge preschool sequence. Students spend the majority of their time learning in English with peers the same age as them in a 3-year old class or a 4-year old class. Each classroom has a certified lead teacher and certified assistant teacher. AXIS follows state guidelines on child to teacher ratios. AXIS will be working towards NAEYC certification, the highest certification of a early childhood learning center.
During same-age English learning time students are engaged in a content-rich, developmentally-appropriate environment where teachers construct teacher-directed and child-directed learning experiences and activities aligned with the Core Knowledge curriculum.
“The Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence is a set of model guidelines describing fundamental competencies and specific knowledge that, for children from three to five years of age, can provide a solid, coherent foundation for later learning in kindergarten and beyond."
"The Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence is the result of a long process of research and critical review...resulting in a synthesis of exemplary practice and experience, both in the United States and abroad (France, Japan, Korea, and Italy)... The programs and practices have been empirically validated with millions of young children (here and) elsewhere in the world." More about the Core Knowledge Preschool Sequence can be found here.
This sequence includes building knowledge and skills in these areas: movement and coordination, social emotional development, language skills, visual arts, music, mathematics, history and geography, and science. Teachers work to integrate content areas together.
AXIS teachers use Reggio-Emilia inspired techniques to engage students in learning experiences and activities. These techniques include in-depth collaborative projects driven by children’s interests, the presentation of new ideas in multiple forms (print, art, drama, puppetry, etc.), collaboration, observation and documentation, classroom and environment as the third teacher, and the dual teacher role of teacher as teacher and learner alongside children. More information about Reggio-Emilia inspired techniques can be found here.
During language immersion time, children are grouped by language in a mixed-age setting (3 and 4-year olds together) in the Spanish, French, or Mandarin classroom. The language immersion enrichment teacher builds oral and listening skills through language acquisition activities and experiences. The teacher also brings in stories, art, music, and cultural artifacts from countries that speak the language. Language classes are capped and language choice is available on a first-come, first served basis. As mentioned above, the state requires and child-development research documents that preschools should be a healthy mix of teacher-led and child-led time. The language immersion time will be a teacher-led time to maximize partner language development. For 3 and 4-year olds, partner language time will be at least 60 minutes or 36% of the teacher-led time in a full-day or 44% of the teacher-led time in a half-day. The activities used will be engaging, multi-sensory, and include movement and other developmentally-appropriate activities.

PLEASE NOTE: AXIS is committed to operating with full transparency. Because AXIS only recently announced our physical location for next year, AXIS is still in the preschool licensing process as the process is location dependent. We are confident the license will be secured by July 31, 2019 as our location is already currently a licensed preschool. We are asking families in definite need of care to register for back up care in the unlikely event the license is delayed. Families that provide evidence they have paid a registration fee at another preschool or child care center for the 2019-2020 school year will have the AXIS International Academy Preschool registration fee waived this year.
